All I want for Juneteenth is Black Liberation.
Today commemorates our deliverance from chattel slavery. I yearn for the complete destruction of our chains.
Freedom is a funny concept. On the one hand, you almost have to compare your current state to where you were before. On the other, you have to look at where you still have left to go. I think you’d agree with me that Black folks are doing much better than we were during colonization and slavery. I’m sure you’ll also agree that our current predicament is far from ideal. However, our mutual agreement may very well end there. I want Black power. I want Black liberation. I want Black autonomy and self-determination across the entire diaspora.
In more simple terms, I want Black children to be free to play and grow in their communities without a care in the world. I want Black mommas’ only concern during their pregnancy to be how much they’ll spoil their baby rotten. From the Motherland to the Caribbean to Europe, the Americas, and everywhere in between, I want all Black people to have safety and peace of mind. We deserve it all and then some, and I’ve dedicated my life to making it a reality. The question is, how do we get there, and my answer may very well surprise you.
