Gas prices are too damn high.
The pain at the pump has impacted us all. Where do we go from here?
My gas light came on as I was on my way home from work. I figured I’d check the gas station on the corner at the entrance to my apartment complex. It was $4.09. “Surely, if I just wait a few days, it’ll go down again,” I told myself. A few days later, I had to leave again. The same gas station was now priced at $4.25. I’m quite fortunate. I work from home most days, I live only 5 minutes from my job when I must go in-person, and it pays me well enough to have disposable income after paying for my essentials. I only mention this to acknowledge that I’m very well-positioned to survive a gas price hike. Although I’m a far cry from the most impacted, the fact still remains that gas prices are too damn high.
Many of us in the United States like to credit or blame the President when gas prices change, but the truth is they have very little control over gas prices. (Don’t worry, we’ll get to what Joe Biden & his friends in Congress could be doing later.) First and foremost, We should discuss the real culprit here: fossil fuel executives. They set their own prices just like any capitalist corporation does. They’ve cited supply issues and Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as reasons why gas prices have soared, however, there’s a much simpler explanation. They want more money.
